It’s very easy not to do the things that matter to you and your business. It’s very easy not to spend the necessary time developing effective social media platforms because you’re “too busy”. It’s very easy not to invest funds into PR or SEO because you’ve always advertised and you “rely on it”. I know this because I hear this sort of stuff a lot. But the fact is, however you dress them up these aren’t reasons for inaction. They’re excuses.
We all have our excuses for remaining static and not challenging the status quo. And I’m the same as anyone else. I’ve been truly awful when it comes to writing for FutureComms over the last few weeks. It’s not that I haven’t had any ideas for posts, it’s just that I haven’t got round to writing them. But it doesn’t stop there. I haven’t been reading anywhere near as much as I used to (and consequently, my feed.ly account is overflowing with RSS feeds), I haven’t commented on a blog post or article in a couple of months, and my Twitter presence has nosedived too.
Being Honest
I’ve been explaining away this slackness as ‘being too busy’; as the fact that I’ve got a three month old baby and I’ve been extremely busy in my day job at BOTTLE, so I don’t have time. But that’s not a reason, it’s an excuse. The fact I’ve had to admit to myself is that I’ve had other priorities over the last few weeks. Had I really wanted to write more, I could have found the time. It’s very little to do with being too busy.
The fact is, if something’s important to you, you will make time for it. You will invest the necessary budget in it. If it’s not important to you, that’s fine. Social communications isn’t for everyone (even though I might believe it should be). PR and SEO may not take precedence for some people and businesses. But just be honest about it with yourself. Don’t go through the motions and then bail when it comes to crunch time. Admit that you have other priorities and ditch the excuses.
